A strange question about Peter Parker...
Posted by JLH on March 01, 2003 at 05:39:19:

In "Untold Tales of Spider-Man" Minus 1, Mary Parker reveals she's pregnant. Shouldn't that count as the earliest known appearance of Pete, even if it's BTS?

XU 42/3 and X 39
Posted by Paul Bourcier on March 01, 2003 at 08:18:58:

I just read the third story in X-Men Unlimited #42 and it seems that it contradicts the course of events at the end of X-Men v.1 #39, in which the X-Men get their new, individually-styled costumes. I don't have X-Men v.1 #39; the closest I have is the plot description in Official Marvel Index to the X-Men, v.1 #2. Can anyone reconcile these two stories?

Holy shit! Current Marvel comics contradicting older Marvel comics??? Who'd'a thunk it??!

Mutter, grumble. X-Men Unlimited strikes again.

> Can anyone reconcile these two stories?

I'll take it to work with me today and see if I can. However, we may just have to shrug and place it right before the last scenes in UX #39 -- working on the assumption that Jean got her costume first, and the boys got theirs, say, the day after.

Have we ever seen Jean have a birthday before, by the way?

Yeah, it would be nice if Marvel writers actually read the comics...

Thanks, Jeph. That last scene in UX 39 will be critical. If everyone, including Jean, gets their new costumes at the same time (especially if Jean is wearing her old costume at the time of receipt), then we're gonna have some 'splainin' to do.

> Have we ever seen Jean have a birthday before, by the way?

I don't believe so. Bobby's was seen in UX 32 (February) and Hank's in X:HY 22 (December). Placement of XU 42/3 at the time of UX 39 would mean an April birthday for Jean.

Yes ... yes I can.

At the very end of UX #39, after the Mutant Master has been defeated and the X-Men return home, Jean says "I just remembered something great!" -- and she proceeds to hand out new costumes for all the boys.

That's right -- JEAN gave them all new costumes. Not the professor. And she doesn't utter a word about her own new outfit -- for example, she doens't say that she made it herself -- meaning the story in XU #42/3, showing her receiving it for a birthday gift, DOESN'T contradict anmything.

What Jean DOES say is, "just before the episode with the Juggernaut, I had been hard at work on a pet project of mine -- with the professor's permission!" To me, this implies that Jean's birthday in XU #42/3 takes place just before "the Juggernaut episode" (meaning, between UX #31 and #32), and she was inspired by her birthday gift to make new costumes for EVERYONE.

It also gives us an implied explanation as to why she's wearing her old outfit in UX #32-38 -- she didn't want to wear her new one until everybody else's was ready.

But, yeah -- XU #42/3 doesn't contradict a damned thing about UX #39, and it fits nicely into continuity right between UX #31-32.

Hooray!

...I missed this the first time I replied, but--

Placing XU #42/3 between UX #31-32 would put Jean's birthday just BEFORE Bobby's, in "February" on your calendar. This would also give her an additonal layer of motivation to not wear her new outfit from UX #32-38.

If Jean got a new costume for her birthday, and knew that Bobby's birthday was right around the corner, she might have had the idea to make one for HIM. That idea would then have mushroomed into making new outfits for EVERYONE, and in turn wouldn't have been finished by Bobby's birthday -- so Jean felt guilty and held off on wearing her own until they were all finished.

Yes? No? :-)

As a curio, this means that Jean is almost exactly a full year older then Bobby -- he being constantly described as the youngest X-Man.

Actually, Jean could be mere days older than Bobby, as in the scenario you describe, her birthday comes first (before Bobby's in UX 32).

I was going to counter-propose placement just before UX 35, but then realized that Professor X was held captive from UX 33 to UX 37. So yes, this story should work just before UX 32. Although I'm afraid this means the short sleeves and green trees we see in XU 42/3 are topical, as the story would occur just before Bobby Drake's birthday in mid February :(

Thanks for reconciling this, Jeph!

Masked Marauder
Posted by Niglo on March 01, 2003 at 12:43:56:

I have one small addition to the Masked Marauder's chronology.

In Peter Parker : Spectacular Spider-Man #23, the Marauder appears at the end of the story. Though he is not named, and hidden in the dark, his helmet can be easily identified (and the story beginning in #25 confirms his identity).

Therefore his chronology should read :

WBN 43
***PPTSS 23-BTS
PPTSS 25

I was just looking at that myself! As he is actually IN the story, albeit obscurely, it should be a full entry, not a -BTS.

The Masked Marauder (as Big M) also appears -BTS in PPTSS 22. On Pg 27/2 one of the hoods phones Big M and informs him of what's is happening vis a vis Spider-man.

Jimmy Flowers spake:

> Hulk (Vol. 1) 266
> Warlock & The Infinity Watch 4
> New Warriors (Vol. 1) Annual 1

These are all rehashbacks, so they may not be worth noting.

> Captain Marvel (Vol. 5) 28

The placement is conjecture based on Yondu wearing a loincloth. Don't ask.

> X-Men & Spider-Man: Time's Arrow Book 3: The Future (Novel)

This isn't canon, but I threw it in for completeness' sake.

> New Warriors (Vol. 1) 70

Another rehashback.

On another note, I'd like to see listings for the Timekeepers & Timetwisters (don't remember if those are one word or two).

Got an addition here. They recently took on some Avengers in Avengers(vol3)#56. In the issue various members recount their battle with them that took place "last month" according to Beast. Elements seen(well at least those named) in the flashback are as follows:
Neodymium
Arsenic
Beryllium
Ruthenium
Sodium
Cesium
Tungsten
Nickel
Platinum
also seen in the flashback and a flashback in the flashback was their creator Dr. Vasily Khandruvitch, though I'm unsure if you want to actually list him as part of the roster.

The X-Babies are next seen in the X-Babies Reborn(dated Jan 2000) and the members seen in this issure are:
Shower
Wolvie
Sugah
Creepy Crawler
Psychilde
Colossusus(nope not a misprint)
The Prof
Shadowkitty

I don't see this book listed anywhere on the MCP under the other characters that appeared or under the gap books. Where should I post/mail the info on that book?

Does anyone know what happened to the Michael Collins DEATHLOK character? I was re-reading some of his series, and was curious what Marvel did with him.

What was the last issue that we saw him in?

DD in Iron Man v.1#7
Posted by Niglo on March 02, 2003 at 08:07:39:

In Daredevil's chronology, it is indicated that DD appeared In Iron Man v.1 #7, between DD #47 & 48.

I don't have this issue, only it's french edition, which was heavily edited and in which DD doesn't appear at all.

I searched on the web, and found this commentary, on the DD Ressource website :

"Iron Man #7
Nov 1968, 20 pgs., 12
"The Maggia Strikes"
Goodwin, Tuska, Craig, Simek

Iron Man battles Gladiator and the Maggia
cameo: (pgs.5-6) Gladiator remembering battle with DD "

Could someone verify this information ?

Is it their fight in Daredevil Annual #1 ? According to DD & Gladiator's chronology, this is the last time they met before IM #7.

And should it be considered as a flashback, if any new information is given, or should it be deleted from the chronology ?

No the Gladiator is recounting his fight with DD in DD 23.

> And should it be considered as a flashback, if any new information is given, or should it be deleted from the chronology ?

Daredevil's IM 7 reference in the MCP should be deleted.

The fight scenes with DD don't really give anything new. The way Gladiator tells it is slightly different from the original, but as he's trying to belittle his once-ally, the Masked Marauder, a little bias can be forgiven. The fight scenes are just fight scenes... different scenes, different quips but nothing really new. (IM 7...5/3 to 6/4). Whether this warrants a -FB... ???. Not my call.

However the rest of the tale (IM 7 6/5 to 7/2) tells of Gladiator confronting the Masked Marauder some time FOLLOWING the end of DD 23 and explains how his armour was augmented.

As Gladiator returns from Europe (where he was left at the end of DD 23) in DD@ 1, I place his encounter with the Masked Marauder after that.

So...

MASKED MARAUDER/FRANK FARNUM/"MR. DUNN"
DD 27
**IM 7-FB
IM 60

GLADIATOR/MELVIN POTTER
DD 23
DD@ 1
**IM 7-FB
IM 7

Iron Man/XO Man of War

Just a quick question. Is this cross-over canon and just falls into the gap, or is non-canon? If it is non-canon, why not?

PS: Can I add Spiderman's appearance in Ren & Stimpy #6 to the non-canon list?

It's about as canon as any other inter-company crossover that involves characters crossing between "universes" and realizing it. Which is to say, at present, not canon, since Marvel doesn't own Acclaim/Valiant. But, if at some point crossovers are considered canon here at MCP, ones like this WOULD be more canon than, for instead ones which involve, say, Clark Kent & Peter Parker supposedly knowing each other from their respective newspapers in the same world they've supposedly always existed in.

Proposed changes for Moondragon, etc.
Posted by Paul Bourcier on March 03, 2003 at 20:13:34:

A few days ago, I received an e-mail from someone named Jay, who was calling my attention to a couple of errors on the Avengers Year-By-Year Timeline over at Avengers Assemble! The errors are reflected in the MCP as well.

ERROR #1

Moondragon: switch the order of M/TIO 61-63 and DEF 76-78

Edwin Jarvis: move M/TIO 61 to between A@ 9 and A 189

Thing: move M/TIO 61-63 to after UX 135

My and the MCP placement of M/TIO 61-63 was based on the Official Indexes to the Avengers and the X-Men. OMITTXM 3 placed M/TIO 63 before UX 135; OMITTXM 3 and OMITTA 4 placed UX 135 before A 186; and OMITTA 4 placed A 188 before DEF 76. So going by those references, DEF 76 should occur after M/TIO 63. But Jay points out that this is wrong:

"In Defenders #78 Moondragon says 'And now I must return to Earth once more to investigate the ethereal disturbance I monitored days ago.' The footnote tells us to see Marvel Two-In-One #61-63. The disturbance she noticed earlier she then finds out was the energies of HER searching for Adam Warlock. After the events of those issues, she follows HER into space to become her disciple. We find out later (in Quasar) HER wasn't interested in Moondragon following her."

So M/TIO 61-63 occurs very shortly after DEF 76-78.

ERROR #2

Angel III, Beast, Gargoyle II, Iceman, Moondragon, Valkyrie II: move ROM 65-66 and SUB-M2 3 to before DEF 134-139.

As Jay points out, "My second bit of continuity is Moondragon and the Beast's appearances in Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner #3 (of 4) and ROM #65-66. This is a bit of a problem because they were printed in Nov, 1984 and Apr & May, 1985. The (New) Defenders' continuity is very tight at that time. The only place their appearances would easily fit is just before Defenders #134 (Aug 1984). There is a large gap while the mansion is being repaired. From 134-139 the Gargoyle is kidnapped and missing. When they find him and free him, his right hand gets cut off. Also at the end of issue 139, Moondragon redeems herself and Odin removes the restrictive headband that kept her from abusing her powers. In the issues of Prince Namor and ROM she is seen still wearing it and the Gargoyle still has his right hand. Before issue 140 she designs herself a new costume and the Gargoyle's hand dosen't get regenerated until issue 141 so it can't fit in anywhere there either."

So it doesn't make sense to place Heather Douglas and Isaac Christians in ROM 65-66 and SUB-M2 3 after DEF 139; they must make those guest appearances before DEF 134.

Does this all make sense?

Has Marvel ever commented on the MCP?
Posted by Ross Snyder on March 04, 2003 at 14:23:11:

In working on a project of my own, dedicated to Marvel chronology, I was wondering - has Marvel ever threatened the MCP with legal action of any kind, or commented on the MCP at all? Are they generally accomodating with regards to fan sites that use characters, images, etc? I'm thinking that they must be, considering the volume of Marvel sites on the net.

Also, was the domain chronologyproject.com chosen with thought to not having "Marvel" in it? I'm mulling over whether or not I want to choose a cool domain that could potentially be litigated away from me or a less-neat domain that I am sure to keep.

No. You know that because, well, here we are. As we state in our disclaimer, if Marvel ever sees the need to protect the rights to their characters by initiating legal claims, we'll close up shop.

> or commented on the MCP at all?

Commented? Well, let's see. Some writers and freelancers have publicly stated that they they use us. Although I'm not aware of any editor publicly proclaiming it, I'd be surprised if there were none. Marvel was kind enough to give us a plug in the first Citizen V limited series. A few years ago, I carried on some preliminary discussions with a Marvel editor about Marvel publishing the Project, but nothing came of it.

I think most folks at Marvel are aware of us.

> Are they generally accomodating with regards to fan sites that use characters, images, etc?

I couldn't say.

> Also, was the domain chronologyproject.com chosen with thought to not having "Marvel" in it?

Well, yes, obviously, but if you're asking if I left Marvel off *because* I was concerned over legal action, it was a consideration, but not necessarily the most important.

1. Legally speaking, why go there? I mean, why push those buttons?

2. There's a limit to the number of characters in a domain name, and marvelchronologyproject.com was close to the limit. marvelchronology.com was an option, but the "project" was an important part of the name to me.

3. mcp.com was already taken, and in any case, not as intuitive.

4. Putting Marvel in the name limits me. Who's to say that there aren't other chronologies on the Project already?

If you have concepts that are complimentary to the Project, perhaps you might consider contributing them to enhance it rather than decentralizing things.

> Are [Marvel] generally accomodating with regards to fan sites that use characters, images, etc? I'm thinking that they must be, considering the volume of Marvel sites on the net.

A while into the Quesada regime, Marvel announced an Approved Site Program to protect their intellectual property online. While controversy swept the news sites and message boards, this seems to have died down.

I have not heard of Marvel closing down any sites, members or not, for violations. For what it's worth, ffplaza.com is a member, so that may give you some idea of what Marvel allows. I haven't checked since the Program was announced, but there were details on Marvel's website.

Just breezing through here, and thought I should add a few thoughts. (Yeah, I'm late into the thread, but I've been busy.)

First, FFPlaza.com was never a part of Marvel's officially sanctioned sites. I put the Marvel.com logo up in deference to them, and to acknowledge that these aren't my characters, but I never signed up for the program.

I think Russ' site is more well-known and more popular than mine, and I can guarantee that a lot of Marvel pros know about FFPlaza.com. I've specifically talked with Chris Claremont (when he wasn't just freelancing), Bobbie Chase (while she was still there), Andy Lis, and even Joe Quesada. Tom Brevoort even had a link to my site from his, when he still ran that. Not to mention freelance creators that are aware of it. I know Salvador Larroca pointed Pascual Ferry there when he started working on Fantastic Forth Voyage of Sinbad, and Mark Waid claimed to have already "strip-mined" (his words!) my site when I invitied him to swing by.

The upshot is that the people who create the comics are NOT working in a vacuum. They know we're out here, and we have their tacit approval to be doing what we're doing.

That said, though, we only have their tacit (key word there) approval because we're not eating into their potential profits. I think if you set up "MarvelGear.com" and sold home-made Spider-Man and X-Men t-shirts, they'd be on your back pretty quickly.

Besides, there's still a lot of potential out there...

Hi Ron

Do you think you could e-mail me that detailed chronology?

Here are a couple questions and additions...

> INVADERS
>
> YOUNG MEN 24

Why did you include that issue? Since the stories all take place in the fifties, the Invaders had long-since disbanded...

> ALL-WINNERS SQUAD
>
> M/:LG???

I guess you're talking about #7 (6 of 12). However, none of the AWS actually appear in that issue. There are only a few undead monsters posing as HT, Namor, Cap, Bucky and Red Skull. Funny thing is that the "Red Skull" addresses the other four as the "Invaders", never as the AWS.

>
> LIBERTY LEGION

They also appear in Citizen V And The V-Battalion : The Everlasting #1 (in the first few pages, happening in 1953 IIRC)

Also, just in case you're interested, here is the chronologie to one more Golden Age team...

If you're interested, I could also work one for the First Line...

MONSTER HUNTERS
Bloodstone, Dr Druid, Zawadi, Makkari (aka Major Mercury, Mercury and Hurricane),Namora

M/U 4
M/U 5
M/U 6
M/U 7
M/:LG 2 (11 of 12, not sure wich numbering to use...)

Not too complicated huh? :)

Thanks for all your work...

Citizen V(the many versions)and the V-Battalion
Posted by Ron Flick on March 06, 2003 at 07:45:40:

Now that the original Thunderbolts have run their course, I think it would be good to clarify the many Citizens V, as well as the V-Battalion and Penance Council appearances, since we are starting to document teams.

I was only a casual reader of Thunderbolts, but I do know that there have been five documented Citizen Vs, rather than the three currently listed on the project. They are as follows:

CITIZEN V #1/JOHN WATKINS, SR.:
This guy was the original Citizen V, from the Golden Age, who appeared in only two stories back in the 1940s, but has shown up in a few recent stories, namely the Captain America/Citizen V 1998 annual, and the Thunderbolts Flashback issue.

CITIZEN V #2/PAULETTE BRAZEE:
Originally shown in the above-mentioned annual, she likewise showed up in one or both Citizen V miniseries. She was the lover of the original Citizen V, who took up the persona of Citizen V after her lover's death. She also bore his child who became:

CITIZEN V #3/JOHN WATKINS, JR.:
He was shown only briefly in the second miniseries, and operated during the 1960s and 1970s.

CITIZEN V #4/HELMUT ZEMO;
As you know, he assumed the identity of Citizen V at the beginning of the creation of the Thunderbolts.

CITIZEN V #5/DALLAS RIORDAN:
You know about her, as well.

CITIZEN V #6/ JOHN WATKINS III:
He was revealed in the latter issues of Thunderbolts and featured in the second Citizen V miniseries. He is the grandson of the original.

Additionally, the original and subsequent V-Battalion squads are shown in the pages of Thunderbolts, as well as the Penance Council, made up of former Golden Age-era heroes and their off-spring. I have only started documenting these characters.

Anybody wish to contribute or comment?

Thanks,

Ron Flick

other companies chronology...

Hi there.

Does anyone know of other efforts to chronologize other companies?

I know of the excellent Dark Mark's indexing domain for the pre-crisis DC, but I did not find anything about Image.

With all the schisms, I guess lot of common past has been retconned (Chapel killing Al Simmons, Wildstorm still being in the Image Universe desoite being published by DC?).

Well, if anyone can help me about that, i'd be very grateful.

Off the cuff I can remember comic-book-sized indexes to the Teen Titans, JLA, Doom Patrol, Legion of Super-Heroes, Hawkman, Crisis on Infinite Earths, and Crisis on Infinite Earths Crossovers.

They were distributed by Eclipse and published by Independent Comics Group (?). The format was similar to the Official Marvel Index series that were published by Marvel Comics around the same time. These were comic-book-sized updated editions of the above-mentioned Marvel index books.

This missed several.

Firstly the part 2 stories below are about "Toung Miguel" and all take place before the series. Issue 21 is an out of order story that actually breaks up an annoying cliffhanger from issue twenty to twenty one.

Other missed issues:

2099 Unilimted 1 - 3, 10
Thor Corps 3
Ravage 2099 5, 15
Doom 2099 14, 33
X-men 2099 5
Punisher 2099 13
Ghost Rider 2099 7
Spider-Man 2099 Special
2099 AD 1
2099 AD Apocalypse 1
20099 AD Genesis (pin up)
Fantastic Four 2099 1-8 (I think he was in all of them)
Spider-Man 2099 45 + 46
2099 World of Tomorrow 1-8
2099 Manifest Destiny

Sorry they are in no particular order.

"Spider-Man 2099 Meets Spider-Man" can't be between Spider-Man 2099 10 and 11 because in that issue Mig's brother knows Spider-Man's secret identity, and Mig is aware of that. I think it would probably fit in better around when it was published.

Solomon Kane

Hey. I noticed there was no listing for a really cool, obscure character named Solomon Kane who appeared in only 2 issues of anything ever that I'm aware of: Marvel Premier #33 & 34 under the title "The Mark of Kane". Does anyone happen to know anything else about him?

If you're thinking of collecting Solomon Kane, keep in mind that the story in the Marvel Premiere issues is adapted from the same short story that is the source for Sword of Solomon Kane #1. So it's the same basic story with different art.

For those interested in Robert E. Howard's original Solomon Kane short stories, I know of two books that reprint them. "Solomon Kane: Skulls in the Stars" and "Solomon Kane: The Hills of the Dead" were Bantam paperbacks published in December of '78 and March of '79 respectively. Perhaps there available on eBay?

While I try to maintain an economy of posting, it occurs to me that I should have provided a link to the entire site that Jess Nevins' Solomon Kane bio was from.

A Guide to Marvel's Pre-FF #1 Heroes (with the exception of the Golden Age) is an informative an entertaining place that is very relevant to MCP interests.

a quick questions on behind the scenes
Posted by drew on March 11, 2003 at 14:58:17:

i know behind the scenes is someone who is not in the story that effects the story, but what if the story would effect a character not in it without the character effecting the story back. For example, eddie brock does not effect the sin eater story in spider-man but if that story had never taken place then the venom we know would be completely different.... any other examples or input would be greatly appreciated,

 thanks,
    Drew

Well, say Thanos stops by the Moon and sets up a Kirby cannon to destroy the Earth. The Avengers save the day. We'd likely see the Earth off in the distance.

Does this mean that everyone currently living on Earth deserves a Behind The Scenes appearance because their lives are all in danger (plus, we SEE Earth)? All stories set after that, from Alias to Gus Beezer to X-Men, owe their existence to that Avengers vs. Thanos story, but we have to draw the line for practicality.

Avengers Chronology version 1.0

With absolute respect for the work Jimmy Flowers put into his Avengers chronology, but I found quite a few additions and corrections.
I've been a huge fan of the Avengers for over 25 years non-stop, and I've kept a record of all their appearances. I do owe some gratitude to both the Marvel Chronology Project and vanplexico's Avengers Assemble website for helping me put some of them in the right order though.

Thank you,

I saw George Olshevsky on The O'reilly Factor!!!
Posted by Kevin on March 12, 2003 at 17:14:42:

Hey, let me start by saying I like watching the O'Rielly Factor on Fox News. It's one of the few shows I watch anymore, (I'm selective with my far too little T.V. time). When I can't watch it, I sometimes tape it. That was the case last night, I got too busy, so I just taped it, and watched it today. For those that perhaps don't know, at the end of the show, Bill O'rielly has a "viewer's response" segment, wherein people email in to respond on what the show was about yesterday. Over the last few days, Bill's been talking a lot about France. Well imagine my surprise when on my tape from last night's show, one of the viewer's responses read by Bill went like this:

Bill: "George Olshevsky of San Diego writes "I think the French would be singing a different tune if Al Queda had blown up the Eiffel Tower instead of the World Trade Center."

And it flashed his name and hometown on the screen along with the message. And since Sean has reported that he lives in San Diego, I think it's a safe bet this was him! The only reason this is of any importance is because, of course, George is something of the "Spiritual Founder" of this project. So I figured since Sean was reporting "George sightings" a few months back, I figured I'd share this.

Sean, did you ever hear from George again?

On another only vaguely MCP related note, I just saw on breaking news that Elizabeth Smart was found in Utah today. She was the missing girl who was all over the news last year. And since she's been on and off again on the advertisement for the "Center for Missing kids" on your front page, Russ, I just figured I'd spread that word that ads like that do some good, since the missing kids sometimes get found, as appears to be the case with Elizabeth Smart.

I am now comparing the two, and for all character entries in the MCP, I am checking if I have any appearances that may have been overlooked. Validating them. Chronologizing them. Posting them (so others have an opportunity to refute or comment). The aim... to help in the completeness of this magnificent piece of information engineering!

Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu

Can anyone tell me exactly what issues are reprinted in the treasury-sized Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu book? Steve Englehart tells of two issues on his website but I think he's just listing the stories that he wrote.

'nuff said synopsyses
Posted by French Thom on March 13, 2003 at 18:06:14:

could anyone please tell me if the synopsyses of the 'nuff said comics are still somewhere to be found on the net?

i tried Marvel.com but they've been removed...

i don't buy anymore new comics, and i just read the french translations of the X series.

The "Uncanny X-Men nuff said is quite hard to understand...

Could I be explained that one, if the scripts are no longer available?

Thanks!

No kidding.

I copied several of the 'Nuff Said scripts onto my computer before they were taken down ... I can e-mail you the "Uncanny X-Men" script. I'll see if I can dig it up in the next few days ... be patient.

CH'VAYRE
Posted by Mark Shaw on March 14, 2003 at 11:32:01:

just a few changes on your listing for Ch'vayre. His first appearance was actually in Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix 1. He was Apocalypse's most trusted soldier in the future that Cable grew up in. He appeared in all four issues of the series. After he appeared in this series he showed up in Askanison 1-4 (which takes place a few years later) which is already listed.

Also want to say I've been visiting this site off an on for a while and I'm amazed at what you guys are doing. I plan to visit and contribute here more often.

Actually, there's more to Ch'Vayre's chronology than meets the eye.

Yes, there's the old, very tall, semi-bionic soldier and "trusted old friend" of Apocalypse in the C&P and Askani'Son series...

...but the man who appears in Cable #50-53, also bearing the name Ch'Vayre, is very different indeed. Both are originally from the same time period, but this Ch'Vayre is a YOUNG man, not old -- he is allied with the ASKANI, not Apocalypse -- and he was sent back in time to the present day *as a young boy*, told to AID Cable's mission.

In Cable #53, he is shoved inside one of Apocalypse's techno-organic hibernation pods -- one of which was used in Cable #50 over a period of 100 years to turn an ordinary 19th-century English drunk into a powerful techno-organic creature, loyal to Apocalypse.

The implication seems to be that -- if these two Ch'Vayre's are the same -- then his Cable appearances come FIRST.

He was raised as a boy by the Askani, sent back in time to help Cable destroy Apocalypse -- then was shoved into a hibernation pod and, while sleeping 1800 years, remade into a bionic creature loyal to Apocalypse.

It is this creature -- weary with age and struggling to balance his morals with Apocalypse's way -- that we THEN see in C&P #1.

Ch'Vayre's appearances in Cable #50-53 and C&P #1-4/Askani'Son #1-4 should, therefore, be swapped.

ahh. I wasn't as familiar with those Cable appearances and did not want to touch base on those yet. What I was implying was his first comic appearance. It's highlighted in red as Cable 50 which came out a few years later than Cyclops and Phoenix, which came out in '94 i believe. Anyhow I always was confused as to what was up with the younger Ch'vayre that appeared in Cable, thanks for the info.

Don't worry, I wasn't correcting you. You're right, his first published appearance is in C&P #1. I was just adding MORE info about Ch'Vayre, since you brought him up. (I actually read those Cable issues this past week, and it was on my mind.)

> It's highlighted in red as Cable 50 which came out a few years later than Cyclops and Phoenix, which came out in '94 i believe.

Yeah. That shouldn't be. Although, like I said before, C&P may have come out during our "gap" (mid-'93 to late '94), and it wouldn't be added to the MCP yet. Russ may have never read C&P in the first place, and may not have known that Ch'Vayre had shown up anywhere before.

'Course, he knows NOW... ;)

No sweat.

The Adventures of Captain America was superbly scripted and beautifully drawn, and for the most part, stayed well within continuity. It added some wonderful elements to the early life of Steve Rogers and his training.

The major problem I have is the inclusion of the Red Skull in the tale. Fabian Nicieza decided to create a "new" first encounter with the German Red Skull, an encounter that creates problems with the other early appearances of the Red Skull.

As you know, the first actual Golden Age, appearance of the Red Skull, as shown in Captain America Comics #1, was, in reality, an American named Maxon. This was supported in the retelling in the Silver Age Tales of Suspense, and again in an issue written by Gruenwald, right before Cap "dies", in which Cap recalls his first encounter with the Skull, although with an alternate ending.

The next actual appearance was the return of the Maxon Red Skull in Captain AMerica Comics #3, in which he creates a giant power drill and later dies. This tale was never fully retold in the modern age, but it has been referred to twice, once in Captain America #109 or 112, I believe, and again in Invaders #5, where FDR and an associate are discussing the Red Skull.

The next Golden Age appearance of the Red Skull was a German Red Skull, who tangled with the Young Allies in their first adventure. Again, this story is in continuity because Cap and the Torch discuss it in Giant-Size Invaders #1. The only question someone might have is whether this German Red Skull is the "real" Red Skull, who would later be identified as Johann Schmidt. Some argue that it isn't because he is shown without his mask on two occasions. Personally, I see no reason not to accept him as the real Red Skull. Why create another Red SKull when there are so many others?

The next actual Golden Age appearance is the classic tale in CAptain AMerica #7, with the whistling Skull. This has universally been accepted as canon.

Cap and the Invaders, with the assistace of the Liberty Legion, then go on to battle the Skull, in the Invaders issue mentioned earlier.

In the Tales of Suspense story that was a follow-up to the one mentioned earlier, Cap and the real Skull supposedly meet for the first time. In this tale the Skull tells Cap the earlier adventure involved an imposter, and then goes on to describe his origin. It is a wonderful tale, but there are two major mistakes. First of all, Cap and the Skull's discussion is said to have occurred one month after the first Cap/Maxon adventure, which occurred in early 1941. However, Cap and the Skull's discussion in Tales of Suspense clearly takes place after America's involvement in the war. The time period would have to be at least one year, if not two, since American troops didn't touch European soil until early 1943. The second problem is that the other Golden Age appearances previously mentioned have all been accepted as in continuity. So the Skull and Cap would have met a handful of times prior to this discussion.

There area other Golden Age appearances of the Skull that may or may not be in continuity.

Therefore, how does the meeting between the Skull and Cap in Adventures of Captain AMerica fit into this well-established Cap/Skull chronology? Not very well, unfortunately.

Only with some severe ret-conning and perhaps some loss of memory, it could.

Which is too bad, because the mini-series could have explained a lot of other inconsistencies.

Ah, you're right. I wasn't thinking of the Red Skull angle. I figured it might have been because of Cynthia Glass. But yeah, I thought that mini was great right up to issue 4, at which point they dropped the ball. The whole encounter with the Skull, including the "gladiator" finale seemed so hokey, unlike the other 3 issues. Maybe there was a rush to finish it.

Anyway, thanks for your answer. That's obviously a good reason, now that it was pointed out to me.

Wolverine #148
Posted by Jeph! on March 21, 2003 at 02:20:44:

I've been taking a close look at the X-Books' "Apocalypse: the Twelve" crossover, and thought I'd mention something pretty odd about one of its chapters.

Wolverine #148 is part of the "Ages of Apocalypse" subset, a five-part story where Apocalypse uses newfound powers of time and space to trap the X-Men in phony realities. Three times during the arc, the X-Men realize that the world around them is false, and it fades away -- to be quickly replaced by a new one.

Now, the thing about these worlds is that they are ENTIRELY illusions. The only "real" people in the story are the X-Men (plus assorted Skrulls and henchmen of Apocalypse) who were in Egypt at the time of Apocalypse's gaining of space/time powers. Those X-Men are:

the Beast, Bishop (seemingly an alternate-future Bishop), Cable, Colossus, Gambit, Iceman, the Living Monolith, Magneto, Marrow, Phoenix, Polaris, Prof. X, Mikhail Rasputin, Rogue, Storm, Sunfire, and X-Man, plus the merged creature made up of Apocalypse and Cyclops (whom I affectionately call "Cyclopalypse").

Those are the ONLY real X-characters who make appearances in the "Ages of Apocalypse" issues. Any and ALL other characters who seem to appear are not really there -- they're merely illusions created by Apocalypse.

Now, Wolverine #148 features NONE of the above-mentioned characters. It showcases Wolverine, existing in a phony reality where he's a member of the Fantastic Four -- but the real Wolverine is on the other side of the globe at this point, fighting Machine Man and Exodus (in X-51 #8 and UX@'99). X-Men #98 shows us that Wolverine's squad of X-Men never even MADE it to Egypt.

There's no way that Wolvie could have been in range of Apocalypse's reality effect -- therefore the Wolvie we see in W2 #148 can't be real.

In fact the entire issue, by its lack of any of the above X-Men, must be made entirely of illusions fighting other illusions. The only characters whom I'd consider giving a partial-credit BTS appearance to for this issue would be Cyclops and Apocalypse, who jointly created the world we're viewing.

Other than that -- this issue doesn't have one single character that we can add to the MCP. Start to finish, not one panel of it is real.

Must be a first, you'd think?...

I remember this arc. I thought the reality warping powers of Cyclopolypse, (now that's just wrong!) spread over the entire world and/or universe. Thus, even with Wolverine on the other side of the Earth fighting Machine Man, he was still transformed to the new reality. Thus, we could feasibly say that was really him.

But if I'm remembering this wrong, and the reality warping powers were for those only within Cyclopolypse's immediate range, then yes, you're right, we'd have to discount that issues Wolverine as just an illusion, and not worth an actual character appearance.

Characters didn't turn into other characters. Skrulls and henchmen STAYED Skrulls and henchmen -- we see Fiz and the other Skrull mutants in XU #26 and X #98.

As for Cyclopalypse's powers spreading over the entire world ... X #98 showed that he created this artificial world and maintained it for one hundred years, allowing his captive X-Men to age within it. Prof. X also mentioned that the vast bulk of Cyclopalypse now existed outside conventional space and time.

At the end of the issue, Cyclopalypse literally reversed the flow of time in his world, bringing everything right back to where it started.

I gues it's up to us -- did he literally re-make the entire world, and keep it that way for 100 years? I don't think the stolen power of the Twelve would have been enough for that stunt -- especially since, for those hundred years, Cyclopalypse was constantly trying to trick the X-Men into recharging him. That was the whole POINT of the phony world, to get them to recharge the still-incomplete Twelve circuit.

My best guess is that he stuck the X-Men's phony world entirely "outside conventional space and time", and that it was mainly illusory instead of 100% real.

By the way, I checked again -- there MAY be cause to give a FB to X-Man in W2 #148. Wolvie (or, phony-Wolvie) mentions a past battle involving X-Man, and we see a picture of X-Man floating behind Wolvie's head. I don't consider it a "flashback" so much as a "mention", the same as all the floating pictures of Uncle Ben we get whenever Peter Parker's feeling misty-eyed -- but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

I seem to remember that the "Ages of Apocalypse" stories all featured different, independent "realities", as opposed to one linear timeline, but I might be wrong there.

You're right and wrong. UX #378 and C2 #77 were both separate realities that ended at the end of each issue, as the X-Men discovered the illusion ... but from the dialogue in X #98, the world we saw in W2 #148, XU #26, and X #98 was supposed to be the same world, just a few more years later each time we saw it.

(Now, the world in W2 #148 doesn't quite match up to the one in XU #26/X #98, mostly because it listed the X-Men as dead -- but they've been thought dead before, so it's not that big a deal.)

But, the X-Men didn't discover that their world was an illusion at the end of XU #26, so it's safe to assume that that particular illusion carried over into X #98 -- where Cyclopalypse commented that they've been trapped for "over one hundred years".

Ultimate X-Men 26 - assistance needed
Posted by Jimmy Flowers on March 22, 2003 at 09:55:48:

Hi, all.

I've managed to break Ultimate X-Men 26 down into 10 flashbacks, but there are a lot of mutants shown that I don't recognize. I suspect none of them have been identified yet within the series, but I thought I would put the word out there in case any of you can name them.

Here's the breakdown of what I've got; I'll put a * in front of the parts where I wasn't able to identify everyone:

Pages 2-5 (8 years ago) Professor X, Magneto, Moira
Pages 6-9 (7 years ago) Magneto, Professor X, Detonator
*Pages 10-11 (6 years ago) Magneto, Profesor X, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver
*Pages 12-13 (5 years ago) Magneto, Professor X
*Pages 14-15 (4 years ago) Magneto, Detonator
*Pages 16-17 (5 months after last FB) Magneto, Professor X
Pages 18-20 (3 years ago) Magneto, Professor X, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver
*Page 21, panel 1 (One week later) Magneto
Page 21, panel 2 (Two weeks later) Profesor X
Page 21, panel 3 (Three weeks later) Detonator
*Pages 22-24 (The Present) Blob, Magneto, Sabretooth

Any and all help is appreciated. I've now indexed Ultimate War 1-4, Ultimates 9, and Ultimate X-Men 26. I'm moving forward with more. Update to be posted soon.

Thanks!

Wow! This is great work! Now, what I've been looking for for quite a while now, is a chronological listing like this for the REGULAR Marvel Universe (and the DC Universe, and Valiant, etc...). Even partial listings just for certain time periods, such as WWII, pre FF #1, western, Hyborian Age (Marvel), etc. would be great! OR, if there are any partial listings for certain points in present Marvel continuity post FF #1, such as some beginning around 1970, or 1990, or even as recent as 2002, I would be MOST grateful to anyone who could point the way to me.

I am now comparing the two, and for all character entries in the MCP, I am checking if I have any appearances that may have been overlooked. Validating them. Chronologizing them. Posting them (so others have an opportunity to refute or comment). The aim... to help in the completeness of this magnificent piece of information engineering!

Sorry for the delay in response to this post. I haven't checked this message board since I last posted to Jeph in his "Cyclapolypse" thread. Yes, I've been busy in the real world and such. In case any one else here needed it: wonderfly@hotmail.com

I'm at work right now, can't check email here, so I'll send you an email later. Or feel free to send me an email.

Marvel MAX imprint . . . canon?
Posted by Jimmy Flowers on March 28, 2003 at 21:49:53:

What's the canonicity of the MAX imprint? Is it akin to Vertigo, i.e. within continuity but more "mature"?

Are some titles in continuity and others are out? What about Marvel Knights?

Yes and no

> What's the canonicity of the MAX imprint?

It varies from title to title. Certain books, most notably "Alias" and, I think, "the Hood" take place in the mainstream Marvel Universe. Other books like "Fury" and "U.S. War Machine" do not.

> What about Marvel Knights?

Unless I'm forgetting something, all Marvel Knights books so far have been set in the real MU.

Re: The Foreigner's Appearances--Addendum
Posted by John Omohundro on March 29, 2003 at 15:49:00:

Gentlemen:

I was looking at my collection of comics again, and I noticed that your list of "The Foreigner"'s appearances is missing a few entries.

I have the ENTIRE series run (all 35 issues) of SILVER SABLE AND THE WILD PACK, and I'd like to inform you that, IN ADDITION TO his appearances in that series which you have ALREADY listed (issues #2 and #3), this character also appears in Issues # 24 and 25 of that title.

I respectfully suggest that you update your database accordingly.

                        --John Omohundro

As Silver Sable # 24 and 25 were published between 1992 and 1994, they most likely fall into the first gap. Therefore, I respectfully SUGGEST you read the FAQ in its ENTIRETY ;)
